The World Water Day  - March 22 (each year)

The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution. This world day for water was to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development contained in chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21.

States were invited to devote the Day to implement the UN recommendations and set up concrete activities as deemed appropriate in the national context.

The Subcommittee welcomes the assistance offered by IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre to contribute to an information network centre in support of the observance of the Day by Governments, as required.

The Earth Day - April 22 (each year)

The Earth Day is held on April 22 of each year to promote awareness of environmental issues. The first Earth Day was in 1970.

Earth Day Network (EDN) founded by the organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970, promotes environmental citizenship and year round progressive action worldwide.

Earth Day Network is a driving force steering environmental awareness around the world. Through Earth Day Network, activists connect, interact, and have an impact on their communities, and create positive change in local, national, and global policies. EDN's international network reaches over 17,000 organizations in 174 countries, while the domestic program engages 5,000 groups and over 25,000 educators coordinating millions of community development and environmental protection activities throughout the year. Earth Day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. More than a half billion people participate in Earth Day events every year.

EDN's mission is to grow and diversify the environmental movement worldwide, and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle for promoting a healthy, sustainable planet. This mission is pursued through education, politics, events, and consumer activism.

The World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) - May 10 -11  or 2nd weekend in May (each year)

WMBD is a global initiative devoted to celebrating migratory birds and for promoting their conservation worldwide.

WMBD was launched in 2006 when the Secretariat of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) both of United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) saw the need for a global awareness campaign to inspire people to take action for the conservation of migratory birds.

The International Day for Biological Diversity (Biodiversity) - May 22 (each year)

The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated The International Day for Biological Diversity. In December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as IBD, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This was partly done because it was difficult for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations for the date of 29 December, given the number of holidays that coincide around that time of year.
