The University of the South Pacific [USP], is supported by 12 Pacific Island Countries; Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Since 1971 over 30,000 graduates have successfully completed their studies. Today the university has an enrolment of over 19,000 students studying in all 12 countries. This regional focus, augmented by colleagues and students from outside the Pacific region, gives the university a healthy diversity of nationalities, religions, cultures, ethnic groups and languages.

USP is committed to providing the highest possible quality education and research while addressing the changing circumstances and needs of the Pacific region.

The Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development

The Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (PACE-SD; PACE for short) has its origin in the Strategic Plan of USP 1999 and in the collective thinking of the USP environmental group represented by the Advisory Group on Environment (AGE). Since then PACE-SD has made substantial progress towards establishing itself firmly as a Centre of Excellence in Environmental Education and Research and has made considerable progress.

Since its inception in 2001, PACE-SD has been the forefront of a variety of Pacific environmental issues. In recognition of the need for the university to develop a more focussed and collaborative approach to environmental education, research, consultancy and capacity building in the Pacific Island region, PACE-SD was inaugurated in August 2001The Centre is designed to work with all other relevant sections of the university, regional and international environmental organizations, regional governments and NGOs to promote environmentally sustainable development. The Pacific region and the individual Island nations have made a strong commitment to international efforts to prevent further irreversible environmental change and to promote sustainable development by becoming party to numerous international Multilateral Environmental Agreements

PACE's commitment both at national and regional level:

  • To improve levels of environmental education at all levels, including strengthening of human resources through improved tertiary education;

  • Strengthening of the technical capacity within the region;

  • Increase awareness among policy makers and the general public of the nature of the environmental issues and current resource intensive development activities that serve as threats to environmentally and culturally sustainable development in the Pacific Islands.

Mission
To work with all other relevant sections of the university, regional and international organisations, regional governments and NGOs to promote environmentally sustainable development

Vision
To be a Centre of Excellence for teaching, training and research-based capacity building for environment and sustainable development in the Pacific Islands region

  • Encourage scientific innovation, creative thought and knowledge development in each individual investigator;

  • Enhance networking and outreaching to build capacity and to create awareness on sustainable development challenges;
