COP16/CMP6 - Climate Change deal
reached in Cancun,
Mexico
The delegates to the COP16/CMP6,
Mexico 2010 has reached a deal on Climate Change. The "Cancum Agreements"
approved by consensus at the
plenary session of the 2010 Climate Change conference COP16/CMP6
during the early hours of December 11, 2010 (precisely between 05:00 and
06:00) according to the information on the ECOTWEET information page on

All participating nations and delegates were
reported to have signed the agreement with the exception of South American
nation of Bolivia, whose delegates considered the deal to fall short of
their expectations. They considered the emission cuts not tough enough to
stop global warming and prevent its consequences on the developing
countries, particularly the small island states. They also consider the
deal as a postponement of discussion on what happens next after Kyoto
Protocol, the only existing legally binding deal on climate change.
Bolivian Ambassador Pablo Solon said "For us, this |

is not a step forward. It is a step back,
because what is being done here is postponing without limit the discussion
on the Kyoto Protocol,"
Most world leaders and environmental groups
have expressed satisfaction with the new Cancun Deal, considering it as a
progress, albeit not going to far enough, in the right direction towards
solving climate change problems. concerning the deal, the Mexican
President, Mr.
Felipe
Calderón,
said "It begins a new era of cooperation in climate change. They
are the first steps in this long and renewed campaign,". He went further
to say: "Confidence is back, hope has
returned to the fight against climate change and in many other matters
that require hope and trust in the face of our global problems." For
the speech of President
Calderón

Calcun Agreements' Speech
Ms.
Christiana Figueres,
the Executive Secretary of the United Nation's framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC) , said the results of the Cancun meeting had
"reignited" hope in climate change talks. She said "Nations have shown
they can work together under a common roof, to reach consensus on a common
cause. They have shown that consensus in a transparent and inclusive
process can create opportunity for all,"

Mr. Chris Huhne, the UK Secretary of State
for Climate Change and Energy, said the proposals did not give everybody
everything they wanted but it was progress. "We've made much more progress
than anybody expected only weeks. We have real commitments to reductions
of greenhouse gases both by developed and developing countries." he said.
Mr. Jaram Ramesh, Indian Environment
Minister, said that the outcome of the Cancun conference is "acceptable"
to India. He also stated that the BASIC or G4 countries (comprising of
Brazil, India, china and South Africa) were "very happy" with the text of
the Cancun Agreements.

The new deal has both the rich and the poor
nations agreeing to making collective efforts to fight global warming by
all committing to cutting greenhouse gases emissions. A fund ($100
billion) will also be created by the rich countries to help
developing nations deal with global warming through developing sustainable
developments in their respective countries. Delegates also approved the
creation of the forestry program Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and
Forest Degradation (REDD+) to facilitate the flow of resources to
communities dedicated to forest conservation.
The Cancun Agreements, which may henceforth
be referred to as "Cancun Accord" has been approved by the Ad Hoc
Working Group on Long-Term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA),
the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under
the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) and the Conference of Parties (COP).
