Towards Copenhagen 2009 and beyond - Emission Reduction Pledges by annex I and non-annex I countires

 

 

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an aggregate emission reduction by industrialised countries of between minus 25% and 40% over 1990 levels would be required by 2020 in order to stave off the worst effects of climate change, with global emissions falling by at least 50% by 2050. Even under this scenario, there would be an only a 50% chance of avoiding the most catastrophic consequences.

As a build up to the 2009 Climate Change conference in Copenhagen countries (developed and developing) have been making pledges towards meeting this goal. The responses to date show positive signs that the World is getting close to the limits that may ensure that the impending "catastrophic consequences" of global warming being predicted by the scientists are prevented. We have compiled the commitments made to date in the table below. This table will be updated as more and more countries make their commitments:
