UNEP Sasakawa Environment Prize for 2008 Open for Nominations

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has officially called for nominations for the 2008 UNEP Sasakawa Prize. UNEP officially declared nominations for the prestigious prize open on January 24, 2008.

The Sasakawa Prize (valued of US$200,000) is given out every year by UNEP and the Nippon Foundation to reward environmental innovation, initiatives and research from around the world.  The 2007 Sasakawa Prize was shared by Ms. Jeunesse Park of South Africa and Bangladeshi NGO Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha. Ms. Jeunesse Park is the founder and CEO of Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA), South Africa's only national greening and food gardening NGO which promotes greening, sustainable natural resource use and management and food security. The NGO Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha helps to combat the effects of climate change in Bangladesh - particularly devastating floods and rising water levels with 40 flat-bottomed boats which bring a range of educational services and renewable energy supplies to 88,000 families in the remote Chalanbeel region.

The 2008 Sasakawa Prize  winners will be chosen for work related to the theme for this year's World Environment Day: 'Kick the Habit: Towards a Low Carbon Economy'. The Prize will be awarded for work related to reducing society's dependence on carbon-intensive technologies and lifestyles. Sustainability and the proven potential to replicate will be among the key elements that will guide the search for a winner.

Sasakawa Prize winners are achievers with an established track record of achievement and the potential to make outstanding contributions to the protection and management of the environment consistent with UNEP's policies and objectives. UNEP's hope is that the Prize will offer the financial support laureates need to build on their achievements.

The UNEP Sasakawa Prize was established in 1982 by the former chairman of Nippon foundation, Ryoichi Sasakawa. The Nippon Foundation is an independent, non-profit grant-making organization that supports both domestic and international philanthropic projects; the foundation was created in 1962. The current Chairman of the foundation is Yohei Sasakawa, the son of the first and late Chairman, Ryoichi Sasakawa.
