Senior Policy Officer/Campaigner for the WWF- Danube Carpathian Programme, based in Vienna
The Senior Policy Officer/Campaigner will continue WWF’s successful lobby work on integrated river basin management with the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), with national governments in the Danube river basin, as well as vis-à-vis EU institutions. S/he will be in charge to develop a vision and take the strategic leadership for future policy/campaign work along the Danube, focusing on the successful implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, climate change adaptation, floodplain/wetland restoration, inland navigation, protection of Danube sturgeon, and water stewardship programmes. This includes the establishment of a platform for European water policy within the next year to link WWF’s internal network with corporate partners and other governmental and non-governmental organizations. The Senior Policy Officer/Campaigner also ensures the capacity and resources to deliver results, and monitors the impact of WWF’s policy and campaign activities along the Danube.

The successful candidate must have:
  • A graduate degree in environmental science, natural resources management, environmental policy, environmental law, environmental economics, or related field.
  • At least five years of experience in water related policy work, freshwater ecology, natural resources management, or a related field.
  • Experience should include demonstrated success in policy and/or campaign work, or in managing complex conservation projects.
  • A proven record as a lobbyist with sound technical and exceptional communication skills, social skills, and adaptive, flexible capacity for intensive travel is also required.
  • A sound knowledge of relevant international, European, and national conventions, regulatory frameworks, and funding sources for freshwater conservation and management.
  • Business level fluency in English is prerequisite as the working language, sound German language skills would be a strong selection criterion and the knowledge of any other language of the Danube basin is a welcome asset.
  • A valid working permit for EU countries is desirable.
  • Strong commitment to the mission, goals, and values of WWF is critical.
This position will be based at the WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme Office in Vienna, Austria. The successful candidate will report to the Freshwater Team Leader and will work in close cooperation with the Head of Communication. WWF, Leader, Living Himalayas Network Initiative
This Initiative will focus on transformational strategies that transcend political boundaries by bringing governments, NGOs, donor agencies and local communities together to ensure large-scale protection and connectivity of habitats, tackle the principal threats to the region’s rich biodiversity including human-wildlife conflict and illegal wildlife trade, challenge key industries to minimise their negative environmental impacts and respond to the potentially devastating impacts of climate change in the Eastern Himalayas.

The Leader will provide dynamic leadership to ensure a high profile for the work and to support delivery on the challenging outputs. Specific responsibilities will include leading the development of the Strategic Plan; leading coordination of the Initiative, focussing on the delivery of the regional strategies; managing a small Core Team; and working in tandem with the small WWF Shareholders Group to establish the operational framework of the Initiative; formulate budgets and secure funds and build strategic partnerships.

Applicants must have a successful track record in developing strategic programs and implementing complex large-scale programs; excellent cross-cultural and people skills; and successful relationship management experience. The applicant must possess an advanced degree or equivalent work experience in environmental, and/or natural-resource management or international development with at least 10 years professional experience, as well as, fluency in English. S/he must be willing and able to undertake regular travel in difficult conditions.

WWF-US, Senior Program Officer – Wildlife Resource Security
The Senior Program Officer is responsible for the development, coordination and supervision of TRAFFIC program interests and projects relating to conservation of wildlife resources subject to trade and utilization. WWF-US, Global Policy Lead, Forest-based Carbon Network Initiative
In conjunction with other members of the Forest-based Carbon Network Initiative (FbCNI) Core Team, WWF climate change staff, WWF program offices, and other partners as appropriate, this individual will develop and implement objectives and strategies with respect to WWF Network-wide policy on forest and climate. They will work closely with WWF field programs, representatives of other Network Initiatives on climate change, the WWF Forest and Climate Change programs, government aid agency coordinators and external specialists.

This individual will lead the Policy team of the FbCNI (including colleagues from major forested countries. They will coordinate the WWF Network team participation on forest climate issues in the UNFCCC and related international negotiation processes. This includes coordinating with the WWF Climate Change team on overall climate policy and strategy.

Additional responsibilities include overseeing the tracking of developments in the national climate policies of key countries and regions (eg., EU, Brazil, US, Indonesia), and directing efforts to interpret these developments and/or orienting them to support WWF’s goals in the international climate arena, assisting in tracking developments in government aid agency funding for REDD; coordinating development of projects and programs for developing the policy capacity of WWF and partners; developing and managing relationships with other stakeholders, including environmental organizations, government agencies and the private sector. They will serve as key liaison for WWF with international negotiators on REDD and with counterparts from other non-governmental organizations.

Basic requirements include a Master’s degree or equivalent in a related field with ten-twelve years of work experience in a relevant nonprofit, public or private sector organization. Familiarity with forest climate issues, international climate negotiations, carbon market regulatory systems issues (cap-and-trade, carbon crediting, carbon accounting), forestry and conservation issues is also required. Familiarity with international development or natural resource conservation is beneficial as is substantive expertise in one or more areas of international forest climate policy, including REDD, AFOLU, carbon trading, international environmental funding sources. The successful candidates should have experience with international negotiations and coordination of high level, multi-national partnerships (including with NGO’s), and experience in administering, leading, and managing professionals engaged in development of policy.

Fluency in English required, other languages are an advantage and strong written and verbal communications skills, with an ability to move easily among policy, technical and PR materials is a must.
