International Symposium on Forest Biotechnology for Smallholders (FBS 2015)

From May 19, 2015 to May 22, 2015

This symposium builds on the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Development and Sustainable Use of Forest Genetic Resources, adopted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in June 2013. The Plan identifies the use of new technologies, including biotechnology, as a strategic priority in meeting the rising global demand for forest products and reducing the over-exploitation and degradation of natural forests. The event will share experiences in the use of biotechnology to improve productivity, boost sustainable forest management (SFM) and to support industrial wood production by family farmers, including outgrowers. The symposium aims to contribute to: assessment and information sharing on new applications of biotechnology in smallholder forestry; political awareness of the role of planted forests in poverty reduction, food and energy security and environmental services; and technical support for policy making in relation to family production systems. Co-organized by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), FAO and the Southern Federation of Workers on Family Farms (FETRAF SUL), the symposium will bring together forest researchers and extension workers, students, public policy experts, and representatives of the private sector and civil society.
