Horn of Africa Infrastructure Summit 2015

From Jun 10, 2015 to Jun 11, 2015

The Horn of Africa region includes some of the world’s fastest growing economies with vast untapped resources. According to sources, global development leaders including World Bank, African Development Bank and European Union have pledged more than USD 8.3 billion to boost economic growth and reduce poverty in the region.

Infrastructure development is the basis of economic growth in any country. One of the most important infrastructure challenges that face the Horn of Africa region is the lack of regional connectivity and the inability to exploit the strategic access to markets the many ports offer. Besides transport infrastructure, there is an acute need for investment in electricity transmission, generation and grid infrastructure with the current reliance of fossil fuel diesel generators despite the abundant possibilities for renewables i.e. solar and wind power.

Despite the issues, there is visible progress when it comes to infrastructure projects. Both federal and regional governments are involved in improving the sector by attracting foreign direct investments into the region. One of the trends that is picking up in the Horn of Africa region is a growing demand for diaspora bonds wherein governments are issuing bonds targeting migrants and members of their diaspora abroad and offering opportunities in large infrastructure projects and investments. The government is seeking partners to help build numerous government-financed developments.

All in all, the Horn of Africa region is an important gateway to Africa and a bridge to Middle East and Asia; therefore it becomes very important in promoting sustainable development in order to achieve its goal of attaining middle income level by 2035.
