Africa Electricity: Powering the Growth of Africa

From Sep 30, 2015 to Oct 2, 2015

Africa Electricity: Powering the Growth of Africa will hold from September 30 - October 2, 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa

Africa Electricity Exhibition and Conference showcases a wide range of products and services for the Power, Lighting, New & Renewable, Nuclear and Water sectors.

Years of underinvestment in the power sector have meant that current supply cannot keep up with demand. As such the government, alongwith ESKOM, the state-owned company in charge of electricity transmission and distribution have embarked on a massive programme of electricity generation with a reported investment needed of US$40 billion.

Electricity generation in South Africa has traditionally relied upon coal as its primary source, however South Africa and in large the majority of sub-saharan countries are increasingly looking at renewable energy to bridge the supply-demand gap. South Africa is currently targeting 42% of its energy to come from renewable sources by 2030. Most recently, the government and IPP's (Independent Power Producers) have signed agreements to add 1400 MW to the grid.

Nuclear Power is also a big focus in South Africa. Currently nuclear power is provided by the Koeberg Nuclear Power station but South Africa's plans are to add 9600 MW of new nuclear capacity to the country's energy mix by 2030.

The South African government has identified water as a critical resource, so much so, that the current water value chain needs around US$66 billion worth of investment. US$19 billion for water resource infrastructure, US$46 billion for water services and US$2 billion for conservation demand management.
