The sixth International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Parks Congress will serve as a vital link to achieving IUCN’s overall vision of a “just world that values and conserves nature” and deliver the IUCN Programme 2013-2106.

This year, preparations will shift into high gear for the most important protected areas event of the decade, the IUCN World Parks Congress. Held only once every ten years, the sixth IUCN World Parks Congress will be hosted by Australia in Sydney, from 12 to 19 November 2014. Serving as more than a meeting place, the WPC is designed to achieve outcomes that have global and local impact, and influence the direction and trends involved in contemporary PA management. This Congress will serve as a vital link to achieving IUCN’s overall vision of a “just world that values and conserves nature” and deliver the IUCN Programme 2013-2106.

As IUCN strengthens its role in achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, the Congress will also serve as an important stocktaking at the Targets’ halfway point, and evaluating IUCN’s interpretation and support of Target 11, which calls for at least 17% of the world’s terrestrial areas and 10% of marine areas to be equitably managed and conserved by 2020. The WPC 2014 will-

• Position parks/protected areas firmly within broader economic and community wellbeing goals by increasing understanding of their vital role in conserving biodiversity and delivering ecosystem services
• Strengthen policy and action commitments for expansion and better management of protected areas to cover all areas of particular importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services
• Strengthen the governance of protected areas so that they empower communities, including indigenous peoples, to benefit from sustainability, and so that they engage new generations in conservation and governance of nature’s use
• Explore and promote nature-based solutions to global challenges such as climate change, food and water security, health and a green economy 
• Provide a science-based platform for stakeholders to reach consensus and design solutions for cases of competing interests on the use of natural resources, e.g. conflicts over land and water, as well as cases of ecosystem-based prevention of natural disasters

Achieving this ambitious platform will require first-rate preparation. IUCN is therefore offering two new challenging positions. Emerging and mid-career professionals who want to be at the heart of the WPC action are welcome to apply for two vacancies, one in fund-raising and developing partnerships with agencies that will help deliver the Congress, and one that will serve as the principal point of liaison with the Host Country, and with the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), and which oversees the day-to-day planning and development for the WPC 2014.
