The World Water Day - March

The World Water Day, observed
internationally every March 22, grew out of the 1992 United Nations
Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.

The Earth Day - April 22
The Earth Day is held on
April 22 of each year to promote awareness of
environmental issues. The first Earth Day was held in 1970. Earth Day Network (EDN) founded by the
organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970, promotes environmental
citizenship and year round progressive action worldwide.

The World Day to
Combat Desertification and Drought - June 17
In 1994, the United Nations General
Assembly declared June 17 the
"World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought" to promote public
awareness and the implementation of the United Nations Convention to
Combat Desertification in those countries experiencing serious drought
and/or desertification, particularly in Africa.

The "Clean up the World" Weekend - 3rd weekend of September
Clean Up the World partners with the
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to inspire and assist
communities to "clean up, fix up and conserve their local environment"
through carrying out initiatives ranging from waste removal and tree
planting to water and energy conservation projects.

International Day for preservation of Ozone Layer - September 16
On 19 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16
September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
("Ozone Day"), commemorating the date, in 1987, on which the Montreal
Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed.

The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the
Environment in War and Armed Conflict - November 6
On 5 November 2001, the General Assembly
declared 6 November of each year as the International Day for
Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed
Conflict.
