Organic Foods

Organic foods are foods (plants or animals) raised without using chemical enhancements. This topic is of interest to this website as the practice of cultivating organic food is environmentally friendly and it preserves our soil, water and air. Organic food include the following:

  •  Food crops grown without the use of artificial (chemical) fertilizers and pesticides;
  • Animals raised without the use of anti biotics and growth hormones . They also include
  • Non genetically modified (GM) food and
  • should not be treated by radiation

Food crops grown with artificial fertilizers and pesticides introduce chemicals to the soil and cause pollution of soil and could also cause the pollution of groundwater and some surface water sources. Growing of GM food crops can result in superbugs and super weeds and hence stronger herbicides and pesticides being required to be used. Stronger chemicals result in more pollution of the environment. Food irradiation is a form of food processing that can extend shelf life and reduce spoilage. Foods are exposed to radiation to kill insects, moulds and micro-organisms, but no detectable levels of radiation are supposed to be left behind in the food. Organic foods should not have any trace of radiation left behind and consequently they should not be subjected to irradiation at all.
